The capital of Kerala, Trivandrum (or Thiruvananthapuram), became prominent under Raja Martanda Varma, who made it the capital of his kingdom of Travancore in 1745. A large fort contains several palaces and the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple dedicated to Vishnu and a noted pilgrimage centre. [Adapted from Encyclopedia Britannica]
