Founded in 1763 as the capital of the princely state of Patiala, it was merged with independent India in 1948, and the district became part of the reorganized Punjab state in 1966. It is a trade and industrial centre; weaving, cotton ginning, distilling, and manufacturing are among its industries (source: Encyclopedia Britannica.) Part of the former palace of the Patiala monarchs is open to visitors. Though in a poor state of repair, it is still quite impressive. Its Durbar hall is now a museum that includes weapons, chandeliers, 1900s motorcars, and more. [- Sep 06]
